Despite this, Algeria is relatively prosperous and stable, and has managed to become a regional power, dominating the politics in the region. Algeria's economy is struggling with low oil prices taking a heavy toll on its finances. Hydrocarbons such as oil and natural gas account for 60 percent of Algeria's budget and make up 97 percent of its exports. But with oil prices low and unlikely to bounce back for some time, Algeria's Central Bank expects its "black gold" to bring in only $34bn this year, down from $68bn in 2014. In an effort to curb imports, the bank has allowed the dinar to sink to a record low against the US dollar. Meanwhile, unemployment is becoming a problem - with those out of work expected to reach 11.9 percent in 2016. To ease the pressure, the government has announced a 9 percent cut in next year's budget, but has ring-fenced housing, healthcare, education - areas cost that account for $60bn in governmen...
The town of Ain Sefra, on the edge of the Sahara desert, was hit by icy weather last week - and even snow. Snowfall is very rare in the Sahara, despite the fact that it can be cold at night - because there's rarely enough water around for any kind of precipitation. Climate change is felt acutely in the Sahel region, where the population is largely dependant on agriculture and livestock. The 3-4 months of summer rains are vital to survival. If these alter, food shortages and disasters can follow. This film, developed by Christian Aid together with the "Centre Ecologique Albert Schweizer", the "Office de Développement des Eglises Evangéliques", and the "Réseau MARP", shows examples of measures that can be taken to adapt to the changing climate. http://www.christianaid.org

Algeria is facing severe drought. So far, the country has only accumulated one month of rain out of a possible 5 months. The situation is impacting not just the agricultural sector but the entire economy and threatens to make 2016 a very tough year for the country.

Algeria Travel Video Guide After a decade of conflict the situation improved slightly, and some access to the southern Sahara region has been possible in the last couple of years. Algeria is one of the most fascinating countries in North Africa.Algeria Travel Video Guide in the dramatic Unesco-listed Tassili N'Ajjer and Hoggar regions, near the town of Tamanrasset, tribal culture is very much alive, and the day-to-day hassle common to many Arab countries is conspicuously absent. Algiers contains a vivid mix of tradition and modernism, its colonial past maintaining a presence. Timimoun embodies the storybook oasis town of the Sahara, and the welcoming town of In Salah is split in two by a creeping sand dune.
